Comfrey – The Bone Knitter
Common Name: Comfrey
Botanical Name: Symphytum officinale
Energetic Description: Deep, rooted, restoring
Comfrey is known as “knitbone” for a reason — it is traditionally valued for supporting tissue, ligament, and bone repair. Used historically in poultices and salves, Comfrey works deeply, drawing moisture into tissues and supporting regeneration where healing is needed most.
Due to the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), internal use is now generally cautioned. Topical application remains the preferred and safest traditional method for working with Comfrey.
🌱 Traditional Uses
- Supports bone, ligament, and tissue repair
- Used for bruises, sprains, and fractures
- Supports skin regeneration on closed wounds
- Helpful during physical recovery after injury or strain
- Traditionally associated with grounding and restoration
Comfrey reminds us that healing is not only surface-level. It works slowly and deeply, encouraging stability, structure, and lasting repair.
“Like a stone settling into water, Comfrey draws energy downward — into the bones, into the structure, into the truth of what needs repair.”
🌿 Topical Preparations
Comfrey is traditionally used in topical preparations such as infused oils and salves to support tissue and skin recovery. It is one of the key herbs used in our Organic Healing Salve, a gentle, all-purpose herbal salve for everyday skin care.
🌿 Parts Used
Leaves and root: Both are traditionally used externally. The leaves are more common in salves and poultices, while the root is especially rich and valued for joint and bone-focused formulas.
